Olive Young, Amazon, or TikTok Shop: Which US Channel Should You Start With?

By

Almost every K-beauty brand planning a US entry ends up weighing the same three channels, and the debate usually gets framed as which one is best. Try a different frame. Each channel asks for something different up front, hands back a different kind of evidence, and only pays off in a particular order.

What TikTok Shop, Amazon and Olive Young US each demand and return for a K-beauty brand

TikTok Shop — fastest to signal, hardest to sustain

What it demands: FDA and MoCRA documentation cleared through TikTok's Qualification Center, US-compliant labeling, a 3PL that can scan packages In Transit within two business days, and a creator roster in place before launch day.

What it returns: the fastest read on whether US consumers want your product, and at what price. US TikTok Shop beauty GMV reached $980 million in Q2 2026, and seven of the top ten skincare brands there were Korean. The category is proven. Your specific product is the open question, and this is the cheapest place to answer it.

The risk: velocity comes from creator content, and creator content decays. A shop that stops being fed stops selling within weeks. Treat it as an operating commitment.

Amazon — durable demand, slower to build

What it demands: compliance work comparable to TikTok Shop, plus listing quality, review accumulation, and an advertising budget that runs continuously rather than in campaign bursts.

What it returns: search-driven demand that survives after you stop posting. Someone typing a product category into Amazon arrives with intent a scrolling TikTok user does not have. Amazon has also built dedicated K-beauty merchandising, so the category has a discovery surface of its own instead of being scattered across general skincare.

The risk: Amazon rewards brands that already have demand. Launching cold, with no reviews and no recognition, is the most expensive way to buy your first thousand customers.

Olive Young US — the highest bar, and the point of the exercise

What it demands: evidence. Retail buyers rarely bet on a brand with no US footprint. They want to see that American consumers already buy the product, that content velocity sits behind it, and that you can supply reliably at retail volume.

What it returns: legitimacy and physical discovery. Olive Young is building its US beachhead in Los Angeles with stores, a California logistics hub, and a multi-brand festival. For a Korean brand, those shelves work as a sales channel and as a credential the other channels cannot manufacture.

The risk: treating it as a starting line. Nothing about the buyer conversation gets easier by having it earlier.

Sequencing the three US channels so each one funds the credibility the next requires

The order most brands should run

Start with TikTok Shop, because it produces demand evidence fastest and at the lowest fixed cost. Use the resulting velocity, review volume, and content library to make Amazon viable rather than expensive. Then carry all of it, sales data and creator proof and regional concentration, into the retail conversation.

Each channel funds the credibility the next one requires. Brands that start at retail spend a year in buyer meetings with nothing to show. Brands that start on Amazon burn advertising budget building awareness that creators would have built for a fraction of it.

The one thing all three share

Every channel above rests on the same FDA and MoCRA foundation, and every one of them stalls in the same place when that work is missing. Compliance sits underneath the channel decision entirely. Whichever order you pick, start there today.
